Born in Colombia, studied at The School of Visual Arts in New York Dandi Maestre is well traveled and it is easy to see the mix of native and urban influences in her work. Some of her pieces are outrageous in size and shape using such a wide mix of material inspiration (bone, wood, shells, natural fibers) it would seem difficult to maintain a simple elegance. But she does. Dandi Maestre -one of a kind design.
I remember hating my first (only) tennis camp because I had to play with one of those tiny wooden rackets, maybe if Lil John were my coach it wouldn’t have been so bad…or if I had a bad ass Fila tennis shirt. There is this kid with his skateboard from Tucson, Arizona. His name is Levi Maestro, his show is called Maestro Knows. He had this dream to travel the world and capture creative people, wherever he may be. Armed with his camera, a vision, social skills and huge curiosity, Levi Maestro, lives his dream and celebrates life and the people around him. He creates a reality show about his life that is worth every second to watch. He is probably one of the most focused, intelligent, congenial guests we had so far in our magazine. You can tell he has natural talent in expressing himself towards other people and loves being around people. This skill and talent combined with the opportunity of traveling different continents gives his show this special touch and unique style. Maestro likes good food, loves music and he has been traveling Europe for the last two months. ...
I once new a girl that swore to me she was going to quit everything and go to Italy to learn to make glass eyes. Maybe that girl is still around somewhere, maybe she will be lucky one day and stand up from behind whatever desk she is sitting at and get on a plane. Watching this man turn and turn and turn and turn the glass until it is just right, then slowly heat and add color to the glass until it becomes an eye is just beautiful. His art fills a very personal space for everyone, the wearer of the eye and all of us who might one day stare deeply into the eyes of someone we care about and realize that some of the love we see reflecting back at us came from him. I have a designer friend living in Munich who designs book covers and some of her stories, especially when being asked to design a cover for a biography of a living person, are just priceless. Tragic accounts of way too tan old men and their arm candy wives coming into a publisher’s office to review layouts where the wife inevitably chooses the option that the designer likes the least. Which is why I really enjoyed sharing The Book Cover Archive with her. Understanding how the designer has to temper their creativity with the needs of the publisher and then the scope and feel of the book itself is absolutely wild. The Book Cover Archive is edited and maintained by Ben Pieratt of General Projects and Eric Jacobsen of Whisky Van Gogh Go.
With two collections already released Mueslii New Zealand has taken an iconic puffy (puffer?) jacket and turned it into two very cool backpacks – one with and one without a front pocket. Funky colors with even better color naming; Android Green, Egyptian Blue and Carribean Green are my favorites. ONLINE WORLD PREMIERE. “Inside Outside” follows ZEVS and other so-called street artists from New York, Stockholm, Copenhagen and São Paulo. They all make a living off their art, but they also have an urge to exhibit their work illegally in the streets. “Inside Outside” is a film about the energy artists get when working in the street. An energy they’re missing when exhibiting in galleries and museums, an energy that brings life to their art and to their own lives. It´s an energy that’s partly caused by the fact that everything these artists do in the street is illegal; “Anything that gives you security is eventually going to restrict you at some point”, says Swoon about the art galleries. On a recent trip to Berlin I was intrigued to visit Bar Tausend. I’d read plenty of reviews tipping it as the ‘next big thing’ on the emerging Berlin bar scene, with it’s sign-less incognito facade and strict door policy it sounded like many of my old drinking haunts growing up as a young bartender. I’ve worked in some of the highest brow places this side of London, mixing for the well moneyed and famous my appreciation for quality service on a low wage is second to none. At that time my peers and I quickly realised the better the service, the higher the wage and before long I was leaving 5 nights a week with many times my nightly wage in tips.
Red Wing Shoes is America at its finest hour. The dream of a local businessman in Red Wing, Minnesota Red Wing Shoes is still based in the same town on the upper Mississippi river valley and has third and fourth generation workers hand making boots and shoes with all of the fine details (Triple stitch detailing, Vibram outsoles, Chrome-tanned leather) that make these boots true classics. Not surprisingly the Americana notion of a sturdy pair of work boots has crossed over from the oilfields and onto the feet of hipsters and trendsetters. With retail outlets and distributors all around the globe Red Wing Shoes has quickly embraced the lifestyle market updating their main website with a Lifestyle Heritage Website even providing a link to their Facebook page. It goes without saying that their kick-ass boots are just that, kick-ass. Amazing reintroductions of classic boots, still handmade, still top quality. // ...
