So which is better?
Yes it is definitely that time of year, and for a change I’m actually excited about Christmas, or what we’re calling Xmaukka, as we’re celebrating Christmas and Hanukkah’s. I think something that isn’t helping with all the excitement is the fact that I’m getting constantly bombarded with Christmas catalogues from places like Hotel Chocolate, (super yummy, super expensive choccies) and John Lewis, the most comforting store in Britain, it is the equivalent of a babies comforter blanket, and they sell food.
So I guess I should properly introduce myself, as I have been rather rude, up until now. My name is Sophie the sack maker. The name comes from the fact I am an accessories designer, mixed with my Grandpa’s surname Sachs (as it links nicely but also he was an accessories maker and designer, so it’s all linked up nicely)

For instance, one shows a row of reversible totes turning themselves inside out. In the video above, a finger-operated skateboard glides in, around, over and through Hermes’ product line. The best part? It identifies all the tricks made by the finger at the end of the video! Levi Maestro is a class act. Had a chance to meet him when he was on the adi campus last summer. Really easy going guy who is loving life. The sense of awe is so refreshing. Great look at him in Oregon checking out Numero Uno. Maestro Knows – Episode 9 (Nike Campus) from Maestro Knows on Vimeo.
To be honest, I’m getting a bit tired of all these collaborations. It was good business sense (and/or strategy) at the beginning of the recession — like how the power rangers morphed together to create one mighty morphed power ranger — but now it seems saturated and tired. However, a nice and creative move from this is customization. This was often done in the past for charity projects but now it seems purely creative. A great example is menswear designer Katie Eary’s Nike customization. On a pure aesthetic level I think these are pretty darn sweet! Although they’re probably a men’s shoe, ah well. Katie is a great new talent to come from the UK and her menswear is pushing boundaries (to use an over used cliché) but also playful and fun.
Its Neva here, touching base for the first time as a new correspondent from Chi-city, aka, the good ol’ US of A. Look forward to hearing your thoughts on the random everythings I will post on here…. First Up, Raw Edges. Over in the UK, we have the lovely Israel Designers and RCA Graduates, Shay Alkalay and Yael Mer of Raw Edges turning out some clever new work. Found on Sight Unseen, the duo has produced a new bookcase. Raw Edges, bookcase, as found on sightunseen.com
One word, well actually two if we’re being all correct here: ZAN ZAN http://www.zanzan.co.uk/ “Why do you like?” you may ask, well I’m going to tell you. Great retrospective designs made from quality, classic materials. For example the new range has a lot of tortoiseshell, which for me is (apart from classic black) the ultimate material for sunglasses. It could be its reference to Jackie Onassis’s style, whom I adore. But I think more specifically it’s this rarity, currently, of women looking like women, not prostitutes, not strippers, and not their polar opposite like lesbians or men! Anyhoo, back to the sunglasses. This range, and brand, definitely has the potential to become a classic staple. There is nothing here that upsets me. See below for examples. This is my favourite image and style. The azure blue against the tortoiseshell, and the pop of the red lips just does it for me. Hope ...
I must say I am a fan of a concept store. I believe my first memorable experience of this was Dover street market, London; when I was sent there to do a competitive shop by my, then, tutor Jane Sturgess. As soon as I enter I felt at home in some odd way, I guess this must have been the taxidermy, they have wonderful specimens. But it was also other elements, the layout, the spacing of colours, designs and wares. It excited me. This much like the excitement I have for L’eclaireur!
A stunning look at the future through the lens of the past.
