BREAD & BUTTER The Original | January 2010

I don’t have an accreditation yet but may still head up to Berlin this week to try and make it in…let’s keep our fingers crossed.

In co-operation with System 180, BREAD & BUTTER has found the creative winter solution for the Denim Base and roofed airfield.

12,500 metres of stainless steel pipes, 30 tons of steel, 20,000 nuts, bolts and steel plain washers as well as 5,000 square meters of plastic awning featuring air cushioned membrane, complete an unprecedented unique masterpiece of scenic architecture, which reaches along the entire front of the 400 metres long and over 12 metres high roofed airfield, making up a temporary facade on the site of the historical airport of Berlin-Tempelhof.

Flying pretty regularly I often lose sight of the airport through the queues of checking bags, going through security, realizing that I forgot all my magazines at home, running to the last minute gate change, you get the picture. But airports are amazing spaces especially when you get out onto the airfield and into the hangars – awesome.

The last two times I was at the Berlin-Tempelhof Airport were for the Berlin Festival 2009 and the 36th Real Berlin Marathon. Both good fairs thanks to BREAD & BUTTER moving home to Berlin in July 2009. Berlin-Tempelhof has received a new lease on life and if re-purposing a defunct airport weren’t enough; 90% of the components are locally produced in Berlin, are exclusive for BREAD & BUTTER and will be reused for future shows. Congratulations to both BREAD & BUTTER and System 180 for a huge achievement.

Berlin is a lucky city to have this old city airport open for business again and the chance to keep alive the memory of a place that once kept the city alive.
