Maleen Dalan

Maleen Dalan is a 2009 graduate of the Esmod Oslo school of Fashion Design and her graduate collection of S/S 2010 menswear is absolutely stunning. Named ‘Hermaphoditus’ the subject is Gender Confusion and it is incredible. Bringing traditionally feminine shapes and materials onto the male form she has gently brought menswear, as she rightly claims, avant-garde.

And why shouldn’t menswear break with the status quo? As a lover of fashion I am constantly drawn to the female side of the catwalk, finding myself excited by the abundance that womenswear offers and disappointed when I look into my own closet to find the same basic shapes repeated again and again.

I believe each of Maleen’s unique pieces carries with it a balance and harmony which brings male and female together on a spiritual level. Each model is not simply clothed but appears more human because of the delicate and intricate clothes they are wearing. Her work bursts through the barriers of gender and will contribute to a new era of fashion and menswear.
